Celebrating the ‘Present’ Father.

Inspired by a boy named Heri meaning Blessing. May this blog be a Blessing to all Fathers out there who have found a way to be ‘Present’ in their children’s lives. The answer starts with us appreciating those good dads out there.

  1. A memorable Father’s Day read for dads (and sons) of all ages.

Thank you for considering to review “How Long Does it Take to Catch a Fish?”

“Catch a Fish” is a collection of short stories about growing up experiences that many of us have shared, from neighborhood kickball games to broken bones and trips to the emergency room. Each chapter reveals a new dimension of my evolving relationship with my son, set against the backdrop of my own childhood memories and the early loss of my father.

Like adolescence, the tales are alternately funny, awkward, heart-warming and heart-breaking, a brief reflection at each stories’ end drawing the reader’s thoughts to the broader question of how we remember and will be remembered by the people that are important in our lives. This personal memoir of the father-son bond serves as a conversation starter for a discussion about the memories that define the people we have become or the people we hope our children will one day be.

Dads ‘of a certain age’ will connect with these everyday stories of parenthood. Arguments over homework. The challenges of fitting in after a family move to a new neighborhood. Endless soccer practices and dynamiting bee hives with firecrackers. Newer fathers will identify with the nagging uncertainties of navigating that supremely challenging yet unimaginably rewarding journey known as being a father. Moms that didn’t grow up fishing with their own fathers will appreciate these accounts of traditionally “male only” adventures, and daughters will feel the emotion in these stories, whether Dad ever took them to a baseball game or not.
